Caravaggio

I so enjoyed seeing Caravaggio's masterpieces ~ works I've poured over in books ~ up close and personal. While some of his paintings are in museums, others hang in churches, free for the viewing.
San Luigi dei Francesi
Caravaggio was commissioned to decorate the Contarelli Chapel, within the church. Three scenes from the life of Saint Matthew are featured here. The darkness of the paintings and church interior, along with the lack of flash, make for fairly poor photographs. But standing there, viewing these great works, felt like worship itself.

I love Caravaggio. The atmospheric lighting makes them cinema. What an incredible character he was too. He must be one of the most exciting artists who ever lived!
